Father's Day weekend is right around the corner which means it's the perfect time to hang out with family. Unfortunately, kids today love to sit inside, play video games, chat online with their friends, and totally ignore the beautiful outdoors and exercise! Did you know that the American Heart Association recommends that kids and teens get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day?

Here are a few tips to enjoy some quality time with the kids while making family time healthy and beneficial for everyone. Stay on track with your goals and have a fun and fit Father's Day!

1. Go to the park with your kids.

There are so many great options for parks in your area with an endless amount of fun activities to do. You can play frisbee, soccer, basketball, baseball or get creative and go on a scavenger hunt. This is a sure way to find something that the whole family will enjoy. If you're local to Raleigh, check out these parks in your area.

2. Take a family hike.

Hiking is not only a great workout but a fun way to explore your neighborhood and experience nature as a family. Start off with a short, flat trail and gradually increase the length and difficulty of your hikes over time. Pack healthy snacks to refuel at the halfway point!

3. Go swimming.

Swimming is a great way to get exercise while cooling off from the summer heat and makes you forget you're even exercising at all. Make your pool day even more fun by coming up with games for the kids to play. Remember to apply sunscreen throughout the day!

4. Ride bikes around the neighborhood.

Get your legs and your heart pumping with a family bike ride around the neighborhood or on a paved trail. Riding bikes is an excellent cardio workout and stress-reliever. Safety first - don't forget your helmets and stay on the lookout for cars during your ride.

5. Jump rope.

Jumping rope can burn up to 800 calories per hour and is a great way to bring some music into family time! Turn up your kid's favorite songs and play jump rope games in the driveway or the backyard.

Before, during, and after your family fitness fun, make sure you're staying hydrated in the summer heat. Too hot for outdoor activities? Bring the whole family to O2 Fitness! Our onsite Kids Club will entertain your kiddos with games, crafts, and more while you work out.
